Latest Shootings in Spain

‘LA UNIÓN’ , by CORDELIA ALEGRE

In early August, we learned that filming was already underway on La Unión, Cordelia Alegre’s feature debut. Co-written by Alegre and Marçal Cebrián, the film is set in 1979 and takes audiences on both a physical and emotional journey exploring the origins of the silences and taboos that run through family histories.

Starring first-time actresses and twins Ariadna and Martina Castelló Caus, ‘La Unión’ took part in several development programmes, including the Algo en Común Ibero-American Screenwriting Residency in Cali, Colombia; ECAM’s La Incubadora in Madrid; Scriptnest in Granada; and TorinoFilmLab Extended in Turin, Italy.

Cinematography is by Agnès Piqué Corbera, who is shooting with the ARRI ALEXA 35 and Cooke Speed Panchro TLS lenses.

La Unión is an international co-production between Dos Soles Media and WKND in Spain, and Rara Cine S.A.S. and El Sol Ermitaño S.A.S. in Colombia.

Cordelia Alegre explained the origins of the project: “Creating a team made up of talent from both sides of the Atlantic allows me to develop the film I have always dreamed of: a Catalan and Ibero-American work. A film that represents, in every sense, the bond between different countries and cultures.”

‘EL FONDO DEL LAGO’ , by ISAKI LACUESTA

In mid-July, it was announced that filming had resumed in Catalonia on El fondo del lago, the new film by Isaki Lacuesta. Producers Sandra Hermida, Belén Atienza and J.A. Bayona are bringing to the screen a story that explores the filmmaker’s most personal territory, building an emotional and mysterious narrative.

The cast is led by Àlex Brendemühl, Alba Guilera, Quim Àvila, Aleix Sagrera and Lluc Miravete.

Set in Banyoles in 1989, the film follows 13-year-old Iván, whose life changes forever when his best friend Jan, 15, disappears. As the entire town joins the search for him, only Iván discovers the truth: Jan is hiding by the lake and refuses to return home.

Cinematographer Takuro Takeuchi, a regular collaborator of Isaki Lacuesta, is shooting the film with the ARRI ALEXA 35 and Hawk V-Lite lenses.

“Inspired by an event Isaki experienced during his adolescence and which has haunted him ever since, he creates a mystery story that is as beautiful as it is terrifying, pouring all his talent and sensitivity into it as never before,” the production team explains. “On this journey, he is supported by an extraordinary artistic team and returns to Banyoles to shoot. We are proud to be part of this project.”

‘LORCA’ , by FERNANDO FRANCO

At the end of the first week of August, filming began on Lorca, the new film by director Fernando Franco, from a screenplay by Fernando Navarro. The film reconstructs the final weeks in the life of Federico García Lorca, from his flight from Madrid following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War to his execution in Granada.

Starring Nacho Sánchez, Francesco Carril, Stéphanie Magnin, Puchi Lagarde and Pepo Oliva, the six-week shoot will take place at various locations in Granada, including the Albaicín and Huerta de San Vicente, as well as locations in Madrid and Soria.

Navarro explains the origins of the project: “There are few crimes about which so much has been written, almost always using Lorca as a metaphor and a symbol, and very rarely going beyond that. (…) The idea is to strip the poet of his poetry and turn him into a man, focusing the narrative on a handful of locations, a very short period of time and a single point of view — not to understand what happened, but to experience what he felt.”

Cinematographer Santiago Racaj AEC, a regular collaborator of the Seville-born filmmaker, has chosen to shoot with ARRI ALEXA 35 and Sony VENICE 2 cameras paired with Cooke S8/i lenses.

Lorca is a Spanish-Belgian production by La Terraza Films, Ferdydurke Films, Ikiru Films, Miss Muerte, Kankana Films, Anochece en Granada AIE and Harald House.

‘LIBRE’, by DAVID SERRANO

Filming began during the second week of August on Libre, the new film by David Serrano, written by Joaquín Oristrell and produced by Kiko Martínez and Cristóbal García. The film is produced by La Terraza Films and Nadie es Perfecto, with the participation of Atresmedia, HBO Max and À Punt.

Sara Gallego Grau AEC is the cinematographer on this feel-good movie, shooting with the ARRI ALEXA 35 and Kowa Prominar lenses.

Through humour, Libre tells the story of Nino Torrent, a young misfit trying to find his place in the world. In the midst of an identity crisis, his path crosses with Clemen, who is also struggling to stay afloat in his own personal shipwreck. Together, they discover that they were not as alone as they thought.

The film, which will shoot over the coming weeks in Valencia, Madrid and Málaga, stars Alberto San Juan as Nino Bravo, alongside Jan Serra, Lina de Sol and Secun de la Rosa. Lorena Calero, Nuria Herrero, Óscar Lasarte and Ricardo Gómez complete the cast.

In the words of David Serrano: “Libre is a film that wants to reconcile us with life. It is a story about second chances, about how even those who face the greatest difficulties can always find a light at the end of the tunnel. It is a romantic comedy very different from the ones we are used to, moving away from the usual conventions of the genre to become something more fragile, more human and, at the same time, deeply uplifting and funny.”

‘CHIQUITO EL GRANDE’ , by JACOBO MARTOS & ALFONSO SÁNCHEZ

‘Chiquito el grande’, a two-part miniseries directed by Jacobo Martos and Alfonso Sánchez, was filmed this summer. It tells the story of Gregorio Sánchez Fernández. Alfonso Sánchez plays the comedian, while Inma Cuevas portrays his partner, Pepita. The cast also includes Alberto López, Carlos Bardem, Jesús Carmona, Antonio Dechent, Carmen Avilés, Joaquín Núñez, Mari Paz Sayago and Leonor Lavado, portraying figures who accompanied the comedian throughout his career.

The comedy-drama, produced by Warner Bros. ITVP España and Mundoficción Producciones in association with RTVE, was shot at locations across Andalusia recreating post-war Málaga, the flamenco tablaos of Torremolinos during the tourism boom of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as settings associated with the emergence of the television phenomenon of the 1990s.

Alejandro Espadero AEC is shooting the biopic using an ARRI ALEXA 35 in Super 16 mode paired with Zeiss Super Speed 1.3 S16 lenses. The cinematographer is also shooting in Open Gate 16:9 with Cooke Panchro Classic lenses and an Angénieux 25–250 zoom.

The cast includes Salva Reina, Amaia Salamanca and child actors Daniel Arbelo, Candela Dorta, Marco Medina and Julia de la Cruz, alongside Vito Sanz, Aixa Villagrán, Aitziber Garmendia and Santi Ugalde.

In the story, Santi and Laura arrive in Gran Canaria ready to enjoy their dream holiday in a house with a swimming pool. Cinematographer Eva Díaz Iglesias AEC is bringing Daniel González and Marta Armengol’s screenplay to the screen with the ARRI ALEXA 35 and DZO Pavo 2x anamorphic lenses.

‘VEREDICTO’ , by CARLOS MARQUÉS-MARCET

‘Veredicto’, a film directed by Carlos Marqués-Marcet, has been shooting in Barcelona this summer. Based on an idea by Carles Porta and created by Eduard Sola, Pol Cortecans and Daniel González, the courtroom thriller is being filmed at various locations across Catalonia.

The cast is led by Nagore Aranburu, Ernesto Alterio, Alba Flores, Omar Ayuso, Secun de la Rosa, Alfredo Castro, Marc Soler, Júlia Mascort, Cris Blanco and Mamen Duch.

The story follows nine citizens selected to serve on a jury that must reach a verdict in a murder case that has shaken an entire town. In doing so, they must confront not only the evidence presented at trial but also their own ethical and moral dilemmas.

Cinematography is by Álex García, who has chosen to shoot with the ARRI ALEXA 35 and the Angénieux Optimo 25–250 mm zoom.

Speaking about the project, the director explained: “I find judicial processes fascinating in many ways, but above all I am interested in the intersection between justice and ethics, between the public and the intimate, between staging and the search for something we can collectively call truth.”

‘Veredicto’ is a Movistar Plus+ production in collaboration with Ikiru Films and Luminol Media.

‘HADA’ , by TONY MORALES

Filming began in early July on ‘Hada’, the feature debut of Tony Morales, who has built his career in fantasy short films and now directs this supernatural horror thriller shooting between Madrid and Gran Canaria.

The director describes his approach as follows: “I want the audience to enjoy a true horror rollercoaster. I want the film to be an intense experience, full of tension and jump scares. Like a ghost train: gripping your seat, covering your eyes and screaming.”

Cinematography is by Iván Román AEC, who is shooting with the Sony VENICE 2 and VENICE Extension Mini (Rialto) system, paired with Xelmus Apollo 2x anamorphic lenses. For the film’s prologue, he has also opted for a distinct visual language using IronGlass Soviet MKII lenses, seeking a more organic and timeless image that contrasts with the rest of the story.

“We were looking for an image with a great deal of personality, texture and anamorphic character, while at the same time needing a tool that would allow us to move with complete freedom inside a very complex real location,” the cinematographer says of the chosen camera and lenses.

Hada is produced by Eterno Island Pictures alongside Rock & Ruz and US company A Bigger Boat. The eight-week shoot will take place at various locations in Madrid and Gran Canaria.

‘LA DAMA DEL NORTE‘, by DANIEL ÉCIJA

Speaking about this romantic drama dealing with betrayal and heartbreak, Miguel Ángel Olivares said: “It is a challenge for me, but I feel very confident about what I want to show. There is a lot of anticipation, with many people waiting for my first fiction feature, and that comes with a great deal of responsibility, also because of the scale of the film itself.”

Juana Macías explains: “What I liked most about this project is that it is a family film told from the children’s point of view. It has a perspective that is slightly ironic but also innocent, combining adventure, misunderstandings, tenderness and surprises.”
